Home Controls Industry Poised to Cross 30-year-old Chasm
by Anonymous

Dallas, TX September 13, 2004 -- Convergence with digital technologies has the home controls industry poised to enter mainstream retrofit markets after thirty years of limited appeal in high-end and hobbyist niche segments, according to Home Systems: Home Controls (Seventh Edition). This new report from Parks Associates examines home control applications (lighting, HVAC, entertainment, security, and appliances), market drivers, new developments, and remaining challenges while providing forecasts and descriptions of enabling standards.

"Traditional applications and market segments are blending together because of digital convergence and disruptive technologies," said Tricia Parks, president of Parks Associates. "Given that this convergence is essential to mass-market success, this latest edition of the Home Controls report emphasizes the market conditions enabling a convergence of home controls and computing in addition to forecasting for traditional high-end controllers in categories such as central control, high-end lighting, and energy management."

According to Home Systems: Home Controls, the professional installation required of proprietary technologies and structured wiring have limited most home control opportunities to high-end new homes, a market representing less than one-tenth of one percent of U.S. households per year. Similarly, products based on X-10 technologies have remained limited in their appeal. New powerline and wireless standards, however, simplify installation and may be applied across market segments – from small homes to large commercial office buildings. They could be disruptive forces in the home controls industry, especially because some have the capacity to carry not just control signals but also data, streaming entertainment, and phone calls, thus making it much easier to integrate different applications.
